<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">What are Keywords?</span></h3>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Keywords are terms or phrases that, when implemented into your website, can help connect you with people who are looking for what you do. In other words, when the keywords you use on your site are in alignment with the search terms people use to find the specific products or services you offer, there’s a better chance Google will present your website higher in the search results.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">For example, if you were a dentist in Los Angeles, CA, phrases like “Dentist,” and “Dentist Los Angeles” would be good keywords because they’re actually terms people use to find a dentist in Los Angeles, CA.</span></p>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Picking the Best Keywords</span></h3>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The quality of your keywords makes a big difference in how effective they are. Many factors go into determining which keywords are best for your website and blog, including:</span></p>
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The size of your site</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How long it’s been around</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How many people are searching for a specific keyword phrase within the region(s) where you do business</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How much competition you’ll be facing for that particular keyword or keyword phrase</span></li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;"><span style="font-weight: 400;">How relevant a keyword phrase is for your business or organization</span></li>
</ul>
<h3><span style="font-weight: 400;">Making Your List</span></h3>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">When optimizing content, you don’t want to have just one keyword phrase that you hammer on ad nauseam. Instead, you’ll want to create a well-rounded list of keyword phrases for every web page and blog post. Depending on the topic and the content length, this list could include 3–5 keyword phrases or more than a dozen. </span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">No matter the length of the list, make sure every single phrase is relevant to the topic, service or product you “discuss” in your content. Some call this “topic-based SEO,” among other things, but we just call it good writing.</span></p>
<p dir="ltr"><span style="font-weight: 400;">For instance, if you have a pet food store that caters to dogs, well-written copy won’t be limited to dog food. You’ll want to talk about food for puppies as well as for older dogs … about different breeds of dogs and what foods might be best for them … and don’t forget dog treats! You might even want to cover how the foods you sell affect not only canine general health, but also canine dental health. You get the idea. Well-rounded keyword usage helps produce well-rounded content that’s good for the human eye — and for SEO.</span></p>

Or maybe that was just me &#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Regardless of how off the radar this topic may be for you, it’s an important one because image file size (KB, MB, GB) can affect site speed, which in turn has a direct impact on your SEO.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">The good news is that if you have a WordPress site, there are plugins that can help you optimize image file size automatically.</span></p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">How Image File Size Works</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Every time you load an image to your website it has a certain file size, which is different than how big your image is on you site. The bigger the file size (typically in KB or MB), the longer the image takes to render on your site.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">So, for instance, if you had professional team member photos taken and the actual file size of each image is a minimum 5MB, that’s fine if you’re going to print the photos, but it’s bad news if you place photos that big on your website.</span></p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">Image Optimization Software</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Enter the image optimizer, which can automatically lower the overall footprint of each image&#8217;s file size. We typically use an image optimizer called Short Pixel, but there are others out there. What’s nice about Short Pixel is that the cost is low, and it works in the background so you don’t have to worry about it.</span></p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">Here’s an example of how it works</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">The file size of my image for this blog post (before I ran it through Short Pixel) was 184KB &#8230;</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-WI-1.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-WI-1.png" alt="SEO Tip 9 Example from Cuppa SEO Madison WI" width="450" height="246" class="aligncenter wp-image-6204" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-WI-1.png 1000w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-WI-1-300x164.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-WI-1-768x419.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">The file size was reduced 62.61% once it was processed &#8230;</span></p>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-1.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-1.png" alt="SEO Tip 9 Example from Cuppa SEO Web Design" width="450" height="237" class="aligncenter wp-image-6205" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-1.png 1000w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-1-300x158.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-9-Example-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-1-768x404.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Nice right?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">This results in faster load time which provides a better user experience for your visitors. Google also likes fast load time and will give you an SEO bump when they see your site is fast (for more on this check out our article <span style="color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/the-need-for-speed-improving-your-websites-page-load-time/" style="color: #0000ff;">The Need for Speed: Improving Your Website’s Page Load Time</a></span>).</span></p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">Lossy vs. Lossless</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">There are two major options when setting up your image optimization software:</span></p>
<ol>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Lossy compression: this provides the highest compression rate, which means it makes your image file size as small as possible while still looking good. According to applications like Short Pixel, “this is the recommended option for most users, producing results that look the same as the original to the human eye.” This is what we typically use to reduce image file size.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Lossless compression: this provides a compressed image that is “pixel-identical” with the original image — so no image quality is lost. As you can imagine, this option does not minimize the footprint of your image as much as lossy — which means load time could be higher with lossless.</span></li>
</ol>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>Note:</strong> We’ve found that if there is text in your imagery (as with a screenshot of a web page), lossy compression makes the image look blurred and pixelated. Definitely review your images once you’ve processed them to make sure they look good on a high-resolution display (Lille a MacBook Pro retina display or an iPad). And if your image is text heavy (<span style="color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/web-design-gallery/" style="color: #0000ff;">like the screen shots on our Web Design Gallery page</a></span>), it might be better to set your compression to lossless before uploading.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Optimized file image size is an all-around win for your website — bringing a better user experience to visitors and making Google happy too!</span></p>

When you get to the bread section, the shelves are empty, except for one old, hard loaf that would break your teeth if you attempted to bite into it.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">What would you do? If you had to have the bread with dinner?</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">You’d probably go to another store to get fresh bread.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Your website is kind of the same — especially when it comes to how Google judges it.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In this case, instead of fresh bread Google is looking for fresh content.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Since it’s a critical element of SEO, let’s take a look at what fresh content is, as well as how to most effectively implement it into your website …</span></p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">The Freshness Factor …</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Fresh content is an important factor in how well your website ranks in natural search results on Google. But it’s important to know exactly WHERE to add this fresh content.</span></p>
<p>Some SEO and web design firms will suggest adding fresh content to your homepage and subpages on a monthly basis. If someone suggests this to you, or even worse wants to put you on a monthly retainer to keep your content fresh in this manner … smile, say thanks for the advice, and RUN! This is not the way you want to add fresh content to your site. For more on this, check out, <span style="color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/the-freshness-factor-the-right-way-to-freshen-your-website-content/" style="color: #0000ff;">The Freshness Factor: The Right Way to Freshen Your Website Content</a></span>.</p>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">Create Fresh Content on Your Blog</span></h3>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Using your blog to generate fresh content for Google — and your viewers — is a most excellent choice.<br />
Why? Because every time you publish a blog post, Google’s algorithm gets excited and says, “oooh, fresh content,” and gives you a little bump in website authority.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In case you’re wondering, adding a minimum of one blog post per week can do wonders for your “freshness factor.” Two is better than one and three is a game changer (in most cases), but once a week will give you enough traction to actually make a difference.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;">Crafting unique meta descriptions for each of your web pages and blog posts can improve the page&#8217;s clarity and user experience — as well as increase your credibility.</span></p>
<h4><span style="color: #000000;"><strong>What are Meta Descriptions?</strong></span></h4>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In case you&#8217;re not familiar with the term, meta descriptions are the short paragraphs that Google shows as part of their search results.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Here&#8217;s an example of what the meta descriptions look like when I searched for &#8220;ice cream&#8221; (in the Madison, WI area) &#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Meta-Description-Example-2-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-1.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Meta-Description-Example-2-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-1.png" alt="Meta Description Example 2 from Cuppa SEO Madison" width="700" height="717" class="aligncenter wp-image-5970" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Meta-Description-Example-2-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-1.png 976w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Meta-Description-Example-2-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-1-293x300.png 293w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/Meta-Description-Example-2-from-Cuppa-SEO-Madison-1-768x787.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">It&#8217;s important to know that meta descriptions are only for the human eye — and have no SEO value. In other words meta descriptions don&#8217;t affect search engine ranking. But they&#8217;re still important because when they’re well written they can evoke a feeling of trust and peace of mind. </span><span style="color: #000000;">If people are reading one of your meta descriptions, it’s your first (and possibly only) chance to engage with them. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Until recently, meta descriptions needed to be a maximum of 156 characters long (including spaces). Once you went past that character count, you&#8217;d see an ellipsis at the end of the meta description. Now, Google is allowing up to 300 characters (including spaces), but I&#8217;m not seeing consistency from Google with this yet, so if you can still fit what you have to say in 156 characters or less, it might be a good idea to stick with that for now to make sure you&#8217;re not getting cut short by the ellipsis — like you see in some of the examples above.</span></p>
<p>Here&#8217;s an example of what the meta description looks like for Cuppa SEO&#8217;s web design page. Remember, the thing we want to do here is be clear and engage with the reader &#8230;</p>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-7-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-7-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png" alt="SEO Tip 7 from Cuppa SEO Web Design Madison WI" width="700" height="127" class="aligncenter wp-image-5988" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-7-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png 1000w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-7-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-300x55.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/SEO-Tip-7-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-768x140.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px" /></a></p>

</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">I say “an oldie,” because back in the day text links were one of the go-to strategies for website conversion. Thanks in part to the mobile age, they’ve diminished in popularity due to the rise of call-to-action buttons.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">But text links still have value for website conversion, user experience (UX), and of course, SEO.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Here we’ll be focusing on the SEO aspect of a text link.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Essentially, if you have a text link on a page, see if you can add SEO value to it by including a keyword phrase. Here’s an example …</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Tips-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Tips-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png" alt="Tips from Cuppa SEO Web Design Madison WI" width="1000" height="529" class="aligncenter wp-image-5804 size-full" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Tips-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI.png 1000w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Tips-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-300x159.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Tips-from-Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-768x406.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">At the bottom of Cuppa SEO’s web design page, instead of simply saying: “Contact us” in a text link, we say “Contact us about our holistic web design services.”</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">On this page, “Web Design” and “Web Design Services” are good keywords, AND they make sense within the context they’re being used.</span></p>
</div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Note: I could have said, “Contact Cuppa SEO about our holistic web design services,” in order to get another keyword into the text link, but it made the phrase feel unnatural — so I left it out. Remember, never sacrifice your content for the sake of search engine optimization!</span></p>

Today, we’ll take a look at optimizing sub headlines (also known as secondary headlines) on your website and blog.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In more technical terms, a sub headline is anything that’s not an H1. This typically means we’re dealing with an H2, H3, and sometimes an H4 headline.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;">What this means</span></h3>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">H2, H3, and H4 headlines are all sub headlines, with the H2 appearing the biggest, and an H4 appearing the smallest. In other words, the bigger the number after the &#8220;H&#8221; (which stands for headline), the smaller the headline actually appears on the page.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">At first glance this may seem counter intuitive, but in addition to looking smaller on the page, something that&#8217;s an H2, H3 or H3 also gives direction to Google as to which sub headline should be given the most importance — and an H2 has more SEO value than a H3, and an H3 has more SEO value than a H4, and so on &#8230;</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Just as we discussed with your main headline, your sub headlines should be clear and compelling to the human eye. And, whenever possible, you’ll want it to include an optimized keyword or keyword phrase in it, as well. I say “whenever possible,” because we never want to sacrifice the quality of our content for the sake of search engine optimization (SEO).</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<h3><span style="color: #000000;"><b>Sub Headlines Serve TWO Major Purposes</b></span></h3>
<ol>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Just like you see here, they can segment a page into bite-sized pieces, making it super easy for visitors to identify the content that’s most important to them.</span></li>
<li>Sub headlines are also a key part of every page that need to be optimized. Just make sure the keyword phrase you use is specific to the topic of the page and/or the content that sits right below it.Here’s an example of what I mean …</li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5.png" alt="Web Design Agency Madison WI SEO Tips " width="2560" height="1600" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5718" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5.png 2560w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5-300x188.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5-768x480.png 768w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/Web-Design-Agency-Madison-WI-SEO-Tip-Number-5-1024x640.png 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Each of the highlighted sub headlines in this example clarify exactly what the content that lives below it is all about. In this case, my sub headlines are very straightforward (no romance), but that&#8217;s OK.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">As a reminder, please remember that each web page or blog post should only have one H1 and one H2 headline. Multiple H3s or H4s are fine (like in the above example) — which is why they’re a great tool for segmenting content in a uniform, easy to comprehend way. </span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Next time we’ll tackle text links!</span></p>

It’s got to solve problems — and maybe even identify problems your customers didn’t know they had.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">If your content talks about benefits and value, it’s not only helpful to visitors, it’s also a great start on the path to solid search engine optimization (SEO). To ensure you copy packs the most value possible, always do your best to CLEARLY and SUCCINCTLY answer these questions on every web page:</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">What is it?</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">What does it do?</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">How does it help me (benefits)?</span></li>
</ol>
</div>
<div>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO..png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO..png" alt="SEO Tips Rich Content is Good for SEO" width="2560" height="1600" class="alignright size-full wp-image-5643" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO..png 2560w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO.-300x188.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO.-768x480.png 768w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/SEO-Tips-Rich-Content-is-Good-for-SEO.-1024x640.png 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Google likes relevant content, and just like the human eye it’s judging your content to determine if it’s rich and relevant, or boring, “thin” and yucky.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Rich content helps each of your web pages and blog posts gain more authority in Google’s eyes, which means better ranking in search results.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Thin content accomplishes the opposite, and may lead your website or blog toward what I call the “black hole of Google Panda” — never to be found in organic search results.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">The good news is that if you’re taking the time to avoid the yuck factor and create quality content, you site is already partially optimized!</span></p>

</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Although this is an important step in the optimization process, it’s often overlooked — even by web design and SEO agencies. Optimizing both your image names, <i>and your alt image text</i>, helps Google identify what your imagery and graphics are about. </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Plus, optimized images help improve the SEO value of your website and blog. They also make it possible for people to find you through the Google Images tab during an organic search.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimization-Tip-3.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimization-Tip-3.png" alt="Cuppa SEO Web Design Madison WI Optimization Tip 3" width="1000" height="625" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5606" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimization-Tip-3.png 1000w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimization-Tip-3-300x188.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Cuppa-SEO-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimization-Tip-3-768x480.png 768w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px" /></a></p>
</div>
<div>
<h4><span style="color: #000000;">What to focus on …</span></h4>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Optimize <i>both </i>your image names and alt image names. Keep character count at a maximum of 50</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Follow this image naming convention: This-Is-How-Your-Image-Name-Should-Look.jpeg</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Spaces and underscores in-between words = bad for SEO — so don’t use them!</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Follow this Alt Image naming convention: This Is How Your Image Name Should Look</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">As you can see, it’s the same as the image name, but with <b>spaces </b>instead of dashes, and no “.jpeg”</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">It’s best to optimize image names BEFORE you upload them to your website or blog</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">If you’re beginning work on optimizing an existing website or blog, you’ll have to save your current website images to your computer or a cloud account, rename them, and re-upload them</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">In order to successfully optimize images (or anything else on your website, you will need a comprehensive Keyword Report (we create them for all of our clients) — the report is the foundation for optimizing every image</span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div></div>
<div>
<h4><span style="color: #000000;"><b>What to avoid …</b></span></h4>
</div>
<div>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">“Logo.png,” or “Image12867.jpg” are meaningless to Google, so the algorithm just moves on and pays these files no mind</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Instead, use a phrase that’s rich in one or more keywords that are relevant to each particular page or blog post</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">Guessing at what your keywords might be … you want to make sure you’re using your time wisely, so be sure to have a keyword report before you start!</span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div></div>
<div><span style="color: #000000;"><i>Need assistance?<br />
</i></span></div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">If all of this sounds overwhelming, we can help (we love optimizing websites). Feel free to</span> <span style="color: #0000ff;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/contact-cuppa-seo-in-madison-wi/" style="color: #0000ff;">get in touch with Cuppa SEO anytime</a><span style="color: #000000;"> to schedule a time to talk.</span><span></span><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/contact-cuppa-seo-in-madison-wi/"><span color="#0000ff" style="color: #0000ff;"><span></span></span></a></span></p>

Here, in part 2, we’ll discuss optimizing page headlines (also referred to H1 headlines).</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">To begin, each headline on your website and blog should be clear and compelling to the human eye. And, whenever possible, you’ll want it to include an optimized keyword or keyword phrase in your headline. I say “whenever possible,” because we never want to sacrifice the quality of our content for the sake of search engine optimization (SEO).</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">While your clear headline helps the reader understand what your web page or blog post is about, it’s the keyword phrase that helps Google understand what it’s about, which is why we always strive to have both good writing AND solid SEO in our headlines.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In other words, implementing relevant keywords into each headline can help clarify page content and increase website authority with search engines.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">As an example, let’s take a look at the Cuppa SEO Web Design page …</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines.png" alt="Custom Web Design Madison WI Optimizing Headlines" width="2560" height="1600" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5582" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines.png 2560w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines-300x188.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines-768x480.png 768w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Headlines-1024x640.png 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 2560px) 100vw, 2560px" /></a></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Sure, it’s a simple headline, but it’s clear and also includes the keyword phrase, “web design.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">It&#8217;s a good idea to optimize all types of headlines, but the three most widely used are: </span></p>
<ul>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">H1 Headline: This is the primary headline on a page.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">H2 Headline: This is the secondary headline that can appear on a page.</span></li>
<li><span style="color: #000000;">H3 Headlines: These are the smaller, third-tier headlines that can appear on a page.</span></li>
</ul>
</div>
<div></div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Keep in mind that a web page or blog post should only have <b>one </b>H1 and <b>one </b>H2 headline. More than one H1 or H2 adds ambiguity to the page hierarchy, leaving Google questioning what’s most important on the page, so avoid this mistake. If you want to use multiple headlines to help segment content, which I highly recommend, stick with H3s (we’ll talk about these more in a later installment of this series).<b> </b></span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Next up in our SEO Tips series we’ll cover optimizing the images on your website.</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;">As you may have guessed, we&#8217;ll begin with the title tag.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Did you know that title tags are an important part of search engine optimization (SEO)? In reality, most people don’t even know what title tags are, let alone how to optimize one.</span></p>

<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Here’s a quick explanation of what a title tag is, and how to leverage its power for better SEO …</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">A title tag is the words (content) in the grey bar at the very top of each web page. Here’s an example …</span></p>

<p><span style="color: #000000;"><a href="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags.png"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags.png" alt="Custom Web Design Madison WI Optimizing Title Tags" width="1200" height="750" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-5572" srcset="https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags.png 1200w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags-300x188.png 300w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags-768x480.png 768w, https://www.cuppaseo.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Custom-Web-Design-Madison-WI-Optimizing-Title-Tags-1024x640.png 1024w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px" /></a></span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">Each title tag should use optimal, specific keywords to identify what’s on the page while remaining within the industry standard of <b>70 characters </b>each. A title tag needs to lead with the most important keyword phrase for that particular page, and end with your company name.</span></p>
</div>
<div>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">As you can see from the above example, phrases in a title tag are separated by sticks, which is a keyboard character I’ve grown very fond of because they separate phrases for easy readability, but are harmless when it comes to your title tag’s SEO.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #000000;">In our next installment of SEO Tips we’ll cover optimizing headlines.</span></p>
