Cuppa SEO and 100state go way back.

In fact, it was 100state that helped define the initial direction Cuppa SEO would embark on just about 11 years ago. Back then, the leaders of 100state were Andrew Conley, Niko Skievaski, and Joseph Dahari.

Fast forward to 2024, and there are some new faces leading 100state — Kelly and JJ Pagac. They’ve got a strong vision, kind hearts — and they’ve been kind enough to take part in our spotlight series.

In case you’re not familiar, our spotlight series always highlights amazing artists and small businesses that stand out from the crowd for their all-around awesomeness.

So, let’s get to know more about 100state, Kelly and JJ …

What is 100 State?
100state is a 5013c coworking space. Our mission is to unite entrepreneurs, innovators, and creatives in a community-centric space. We feel that the best ideas bubble up when a diverse group comes together to share ideas and support each other.

Please tell me a little bit about yourself and JJ, and why you chose to take on 100 State.
JJ Pagac is a web developer with over 20 years of experience. He found 100state as his home base while working out of a coffee shop. Looking for a fun and unique community to surround himself with, JJ found 100state at its first location on State Street.

Kelly Pagac is a content creator with a background in holistic wellness. She thrives at finding ways to bring inspiration and well-being to people through social media. Through the tools of meditation, yoga, and energy work, Kelly has formed a personal mission of bringing more peace to the world.

We chose to take on 100state because it was always a home for unique, out-of-the-box thinkers. Since we both think beyond the status quo and have a strong sense of creating community, we felt that tackling the job of breathing life back into the organization was a perfect fit for us.

What does 100 State do?
We provide work and office space for remote workers and entrepreneurs, showcase art from Madison area artists, rent out meeting rooms, and provide space for thought-provoking talks, along with programs for business skills and self-growth.

Why Do You Love Doing It?
We love helping people! We provide a space where someone feels safe being authentic.

How Does it Help People?
Who doesn’t want to be seen for who they are in a non-judgemental way? By providing the kind of space for someone to shine in their own way provides someone to leading a fulfilled life.

What are your long-term goals for 100 State?
In the long term, we would like to be an educational space for self-growth and business that helps to cultivate compassionate leaders. In the short term, we are still climbing out of the effects of the pandemic and building our community back up.

Favorite type of coffee?
Dark roast all day long!

In this episode of the GUTS podcast, I had the privilege of speaking with Tom Ziglar on the topic of leadership.

Tom is the author of the book, 10 Leadership Virtues for Disruptive Times, which we dig into during our talk.

TOPICS DISCUSSED:

T. Rex managers vs. Coach Leaders

We’ll discuss two of Tom’s leadership virtues, Kindness and Selflessness

Why they are so important?

And how we can cultivate and incorporate these virtues into daily life?

Zig Ziglar’s most important lesson

Here’s a brief excerpt of our conversation. you can listen to the entire podcast episode right here on the Cuppa SEO Website, or on Apple Podcasts.

“And so, a coach leader asks each person on their team, hey, what’s your why? What’s your purpose for being here? When you do well on the job, what does that mean in the rest of your life? And so a coach leader, asking these questions, we’ll dig in, and find out what it is that that motivates and inspires and drives someone — what’s the bigger reason for the job rather than you know, other than just paying the bills?

And so if I’m a team member, and I’ve got a leader who helps me see that my purpose in life can not only be fulfilled at work by doing a good job, but by being fulfilled overall — like, the better I do on my job, the faster I get my dream — then all of a sudden, I’m moving towards my purpose, which means I’m not going to deal with depression. And if my life is balanced, then I’ve got that solid foundation. And then the third one is what we were talking about on results versus growth. People said that 37%, the reason they quit was lack of motivation. So what’s the antidote to that? It’s goals and growth.

If somebody is growing every day, and they’re getting closer to their goals on a regular basis, then that creates internal motivation.

And the way that a coach leader works with their people in this scenario, is they ask them very simply, hey, you know, where do you want to be in a year? Do you want to make more money here next year? You do? Well, great. What are you going to do to develop yourself so that you can demonstrate tangible progress that will allow you to make more money? And so the coach leader asks that question, and then all of a sudden the team member starts having to take ownership and they start having to think about how they’re going to improve themselves. And of course, the coach leader helps them.

And the big key here is that with all the disruption that we’re in, we know that the intensity and frequency of disruption is going up — all we’ve got to do is read the headlines. It’s not just the pandemic, it’s inflation. It’s the global uncertainty, it’s politics, it’s all these things hitting us at the same time.

But if you’re growing, if you’re leading a team and helping them grow, then you’re ready for the disruption.”

Connect with Tom on social, or go to Ziglar.com for great resources, books and more.

In our latest series of blogging 101 tips, we’ll be diving into part 3 of my book, A Holistic Guide to Online Marketing, to learn my stress-reducing, efficiency-boosting blogging process.

Since this is part 1 of the series, we’ll overview the process briefly, and then tackle the first tip.

There’s a lot to dive into, including the following:

What is the purpose of a blog?

How to write a blog post in six steps

The art of writing awesome blog titles

Make your content rich

Be the expert

Use an engaging image

Keep it short (or not)!

Create a monthly blog campaign

What are tags & categories?

Blog post frequency

The freshness factor

Original content versus duplicate content

Your blog as a subpage versus a subdomain

Scheduling blog posts

The role of social media in blogging

Let’s get started by diving into the first bullet above …

What is the Purpose of a Blog?

A blog is a fantastic way for a business, individual or group to communicate with readers quickly and easily. It also offers an opportunity for readers to provide instant feedback in a virtual venue, creating a two-way conversation.

Blogs were originally called “web logs,” and they’ve redefined how we communicate online. Blogs have also altered the very fabric of the marketing model, moving us away from a selling philosophy to an era of building relationships.

In a nutshell, building relationships is the purpose of a blog.

How blogs build relationships — the content marketing model
Blogs have altered the very fabric of the marketing model, moving us away from a selling philosophy (thank goodness) and into an era of content marketing, which is a fancy term for building relationships.

As you build relationships, your readers will continue to come back to your blog — and they’ll tell their friends or associates about you. Once you’ve become their trusted source for what you do, you’ve gained a customer and a brand advocate.

As mentioned earlier, a blog can go a long way toward making you a trusted, relevant resource. And although an occasional “soft” call-to-action

on your blog is totally fine, an outright sales pitch is a sure-fire way to ruin your chances of developing a healthy, long-term relationship with your readers.

So instead of the old-fashioned sales pitch many of us were subjected to growing up, use your blog to share rich, relevant, benefit-driven and insightful content — while asking for NOTHING in return. This is one of the best ways to develop relationships online (and in the analog world, too).

Mark is a transpersonal neurobiologist, neuroscience educator, and recent throat cancer survivor. He’s also the prize-winning author of a number of books, magazine articles and academic papers and has published The Flowering Brain blog regularly for 14 years.

In part one of the series, we talked about trauma and disease, how to heal from trauma and how to heal emotional trauma — so be sure to check it out if you haven’t given it a listen yet.

Some of these trauma topics are also discussed in this episode, along with:

Stress hormones and how they affect the brain

Is there such a thing as the compulsion to repeat trauma

Healthy ways to deal with trauma

Does the “suck it up” attitude cause trauma on top of trauma?

Solutions-focused therapy vs. traditional “talk” therapies

Trauma, grief and acceptance

Listen to the full episode HERE.

EXCERPT FROM THE EPISODE …
“So I think I mentioned earlier that for 25 years, I volunteered as a grief counselor. And we initiated the second program in the country for grieving children. And one of the things we discovered was, the kids would come in with their parents once a week. The parents would go to their own group, and the kids would be with us, and they would come in sit in a circle.

For the first five minutes, they say who the person was that died, and what they died of. And once we went around the circle and did that, and they didn’t have to, but it was safe enough that by and large mostly they all did it.

After that, we would put them into activities that were primarily focused on the right brain, like our sand tray, painting — all right brain activities. And we had this room called the Steam Room, which is a room that was carpeted on all the walls and the floor, and the kids would go in. There was a punching bag in there, and there were a ton of pillows in there. And each week, the kids would be dying to see who could be the first cohort of kids that could get to use that steam room — because that’s where they all wanted to go.

And they would get in there, and they would wrestle, and they would throw pillows, and they would punch the bag, and climb up on the bag and jump off it into the pile of pillows. And my belief, based on this experience, is that what they were doing is — in this initial 5-minute circle — where we asked them to say who died and what they died from … they were activating neural networks that were recalling that the death (and in a number of cases it was a traumatic death). And then they were going into this program in the steam room … metabolizing the stress hormones associated with that loss by physically moving.”

Back then, I interviewed Mark about topics like children’s brain development and positive and negative forms of discipline.

As you may have guessed, today’s topic is brain-centric, and it’s an important one … trauma

OUR DISCUSSION INCLUDES:

How to identify and deal with trauma in healthy ways

Trauma and disease

How we can help children deal with, and overcome, trauma

How movement, mindfulness and meditation positively affect the brain

Metabolizing the stress hormone

Becoming more aware of, and moving past, our childhood trauma

Listen to the full episode HERE.

EXCERPT FROM THE EPISODE …

Mark: So moving the body is a is a is a powerful way to help metabolize stress hormones associated with trauma.

A number of years ago, Christmas Eve, my wife and I are getting ready to go to bed. And all of a sudden there’s this loud knock at our door. And who’s this? I go the door, the dog starts barking and I open the door … cautiously.

I look out and there’s a guy there. And he’s wide eyed. And he says, “Did you know that your chimney is on fire?”

I didn’t. And so I looked. Up until I actually went up and looked, I was relatively calm. But then I saw these eight foot giant flames shooting up off the roof. And my stress hormones just went through the roof. So great that I couldn’t think, I basically froze. And suddenly, then I could hear myself in a little child’s voice. I said, “What should I do?” And the guy who knocked on my door said, “Well, you should probably call 911. And see if you can use your hose.”

And it’s winter, right … And so I go the first hose bib, turn it on, it’s frozen. I go the next one, it’s frozen, I’m racing around the house, right? I go the one that we keep outside there, we put the water for the dogs, and it’s working.

So immediately I run it, grab a ladder, and jump up and climb up on the roof on the ladder, and I take one squirt with the hose and that immediately knocked down the flames. And as soon as I saw that, I could feel my stress hormones just going down again, I knew the house wasn’t gonna burn down. It’s gonna be okay.

Joey: Mark, that’s some story, I can see it. And I could identify with it also — that moment, where it’s literally just a moment where it’s almost like a switch gets flipped, right? We could be completely fine. And then it’s like our brain stops working.

It’s funny that you mentioned water. I look what you call the stress hormones like it’s a raging river. Like at any moment, an external source can cause a flood or an internal source. Just internal anxiety, fear, worry, thoughts, thoughts, emotion. And I look at it like it’s it’s like a river. And even when the river is raging, you know, the question is, am I drowning in it? Which, for a moment, you were when you’re when your chimney was on fire — or are we making space so we can observe it? It doesn’t mean it’s not happening, it doesn’t mean we’re not experiencing something traumatic or intense. It just means that we are still able to
identify what’s going on and kind of process it, and make room for thought. Instead of panic.

Mark: Yeah, that’s right. We can’t really think well, when stress hormones are doing their thing. And basically what they do is they sever what’s called the binding proteins that keep the cells connected. High levels of stress hormones just sever them, they just run through the network and cut all the connections.

So you can’t think.

With the fire, once I realized that we’re not going to lose the house, we’re not going to lose all our possessions. It’s going to be fine. Everything came back online. And that’s that this is a key piece. That’s how fast cells in the brain connect and disconnect.

In part 1, we talked about our first slice of the SEO Pie — keywords, and in part 2 we talked about content.

And in this third, and final, installment of the series, we’re serving up a slice of social media …

The Third Piece of the Pie

Your social media efforts round out the SEO pie. Just as with your website and blog, you’ll want to optimize each and every social media post you publish. This means you’ll want to incorporate relevant keywords into each post.

It’s important to note that platforms such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter can help with business growth and relationship development, but it’s Google Business that holds the lion’s share of SEO value in the world of social media.

In other words, consistently publishing posts through your Google Business listing can play a significant role in boosting your overall online authority. Google has made itself extremely self-important in the social media world. Like it or not, Google Business is an extremely critical platform in the SEO equation. My advice: Use it to your advantage.

Holistic Side Note: When it comes to posting on social, long-form, or short-form posts are both OK. That said, social media platforms like it when people stick around, so a good tip is to make it less obvious when you’re sharing a link to drive a viewer elsewhere.

Essentially, test out placing your text link in the first comment after publishing a social media post. This can GREATLY increase the amount of views. Why? Because social media platforms don’t like it when people leave to go somewhere else (like your website or blog). So, when they see a text link in your main message, there’s a good chance your post will be presented to less people. Placing your link in the “first comment below” your post is a loophole or sorts that still currently works … for now … although I’ve seen its efficacy weaning.

SEO Pie Recap

Addressing all parts of the SEO pie helps Google identify what you do, so when an individual searches for your services or products, you’ll more likely show up closer to the top in natural search results as Cuppa SEO does in the following example. The better optimized your website, blog and social media efforts, the better chance you have of ranking high in these search results, which look like this …

The following is an excerpt from, A Holistic Guide to Online Marketing, ch. 1, pp. 14 …

In plain terms, content is the copy (words) and imagery found on your website and blog. And, when it comes to content and SEO, there are two important factors to keep in mind.

The Relevance Factor
Just like a human, Google is judging your content and determining whether it’s rich and relevant or boring and “thin.” Rich, relevant content helps each of your web pages and blog posts gain more authority in Google’s eyes, which means ranking higher in search results. It also increases credibility and engagement with actual people, too.

Thin content accomplishes the opposite, and it might lead your website or blog toward what I call the “black hole of Google Panda” — never to be found in organic search results. The good news is that if you take the time to create quality content, your site is already partially optimized!

The Freshness Factor
Freshness is an important factor in how well your website ranks in natural search results on Google. But where you add that fresh content to your site is just as important as how rich, relevant and useful it is.

Many novice SEO practitioners will tell you that the best way to inject new content into your site is to “freshen up” your homepage and subpages with new copy and keywords — sometimes on a monthly basis.

Taking this approach on a well-optimized site will most likely backfire.

Why? Because once your site is well optimized, changing the SEO on your homepage or subpages is similar to changing your phone number every month: It makes no sense. Just as your customers depend on your phone number as a means to reach you, Google is depending on your optimized content to find you and connect you with individuals who need you. Once you change the SEO on a page, the result can often be going back to square one — losing some or all of your page authority (credibility) with Google.

In other words, unless something changes — like a service or product — or one of your pages starts to perform poorly, you’ll want to leave well-optimized content alone on your home page and subpages.

So, if you need fresh content, where does it come from?

Fresh Content Comes from Your Blog
Use that blog of yours (like I’m doing right now) to generate the fresh content Google — and your viewers — are looking for. Adding a minimum of one blog post per week can do wonders for your “freshness factor.” Why? Because every time you publish a blog post, Google notices and gives your website credit for having some new, fresh content.

And, by the way, each blog post is excellent fodder for your social media efforts, too. Speaking of which, we’ll be tackling that topic in part three of this series.

Before we do, let’s take a moment to answer the question:

What is Search Engine Optimization (SEO)?

In a nutshell, SEO is a process that has the ability to improve the natural ranking of your website or blog in search results — leading to increased traffic, sales, customer engagement and overall growth. SEO is the connector between someone who’s making a specific query on Google (or another search engine) with websites and/or blogs that contain relevant information pertaining to the query.

We’ve all performed countless searches, right? And on the surface, it seems pretty simple. Someone performs a search — say with the keyword “plumber” — and Google looks for and delivers results that are relevant to this keyword phrase. This, in and of itself, is no big news. But the question is, how does Google decide which results to list? And why do some sites or blogs rank higher than others?

Search engine optimization is a large part of the answer to these questions. It plays a critical role in determining where a website or blog ranks in the natural (also referred to as “organic”) search results.

Let’s take a deeper look at how this works, and learn about …

THE SEO PIE

Part of search engine optimization is the selection and strategic implementation of optimal keywords into your website content. Keywords account for approximately one-third of the SEO pie — a significant amount, for sure, but not a complete package by any means. In the past, keywords were a bigger piece of the pie. Then blogs and social media came along.

Now, effective SEO is broken into three major parts: keywords, content and social media. Together, they make up the SEO pie. And in this tip of the day, we’re going to focus our attention on keywords …

Keywords
You’ve probably heard the term “keywords” referred to more than once in relation to your website. And although you may know they’re a critical element in SEO, you may be wondering exactly what keywords are.

Keywords are terms or phrases that, when implemented into your website, can help connect you with people who are looking for what you do. In other words, when the keywords you use on your site are in alignment with the search terms people use to find the specific products or services you offer, there’s a better chance Google will present your website higher in the search results.

That said, the quality of your keywords makes a big difference in how effective they are. Many factors go into determining which keywords are best for your website and blog, including:

The size of your site

How long it’s been around

How many people are searching for a specific keyword phrase
within the region(s) where you do business

How much competition you’ll be facing for that particular keyword
or keyword phrase

How relevant a keyword phrase is for your organization

Now that we’ve got a basic definition in place, let’s dive deeper for a greater understanding of what I like to call …

Keyword Hierarchy
This is something I’ve developed over the years to help identify optimal keyword phrase usage.

Essentially, when optimizing content, you don’t want to have just one keyword phrase that you hammer on ad nauseam. Instead, you’ll want to create a well-rounded list of keyword phrases for every web page and blog post. Depending on the topic and the content length, this list could include 3–5 keyword phrases or more than a dozen.

No matter the length of the list, make sure every single phrase is relevant to the topic, service or product you “discuss” in your content.

Once you’ve developed your list of keywords for a particular web page or blog post, you’ll need to decide which are primary, secondary and semantic, respectively.

Primary Keywords: As “primary” indicates, these are the main keywords in your content. Sometimes you’ll determine them in advance; other times your organically written content will dictate them.

Secondary Keywords: Used less often than primary keywords, these are still specific to the website page or blog post you’re optimizing.

Semantic Keywords:Used only once or twice, at most, these stillplay an important role in “rounding out” the relevance of the content.

As you can see, semantic and secondary keywords play a supporting role in the optimization of content. They’re good to use, but they don’t have the oomph that a main keyword has, typically for three reasons: 1) they have low search numbers; 2) they have high competition; 3) they’re not the main topic of the page, but they work tangentially to support the main topic. An SEO novice might use secondary and semantic keywords as main keywords — or might overlook them completely. In Part 2 of the book, we’ll dive deeper into primary, secondary and semantic keyword usage.

Long-tail Keywords
This is a fancy term for using keyword phrases that are typically three or more words long. Very often, what makes a keyword phrase long-tail is the fact that it has some “definers” or “qualifiers” in it, making it very specific.

For example, “dentist” is most likely going to be a strong keyword, no matter where your dental office is located. But I’ll bet it also has very high competition. Adding qualifiers to the keyword — “Dentist Madison WI” for example — makes it more specific and might have less competition from other area dental offices.

Keyword Density
The term “keyword density” is worth a quick mention here. Keyword density is what it sounds like: the number of times (density) a keyword phrase appears on a page compared with the total number of words on the page.

Over the years, I’ve heard SEO experts argue that a keyword phrase needs to occur a certain percentage of the time to be considered an actual keyword. Through testing, I’ve found this untrue. Although a keyword phrase typically needs to appear more than once within the content to be taken seriously by Google, it DOES NOT need to appear a certain percentage of the time. That’s no way to optimize — and that’s no way to write good, relevant content.

Next time, we’ll dive into the content slice of the SEO pie.

Today, we’re sharing some insights from my recent conversation with Camille Gerrick. Camille is a neurodivergent artist living in Charlottesville, Virginia. And while her narcolepsy and ADHD present challenges to running a business and doing all the normal things grownups are supposed to do, she prefers to think of these conditions as her artistic superpowers.

What does it mean when someone is neurodivergent?
Being neurodivergent or neurodiverse means that the brain is wired differently from everyone else’s. Some conditions that might fall under this spectrum of neurodiversity are ADHD, autism, and dyslexia. When you think about neurodiversity, it’s important to acknowledge that just because that brain is different, it doesn’t mean that it’s any less than a neurotypical brain. Instead, it’s more about focusing on the strengths that neurodiversity will bring to the situation. For example, people with ADHD may be notoriously bad with time management, but they can also be very passionate and driven. And when we’re interested in something, we can spend hours on it and not even realize it—thinking of our differences as strengths.

You grew up as a kid in the 80s and 90s; how has that affected your art style?
I remember having a lot of really obnoxious outfits like these crazy patterns with squiggles and triangles and loud colors. The big scrunchies, the side ponytails, and I guess I just never really grew out of that, to be honest. Colors just make me happy. When I was a kid in elementary school, Lisa Frank was a big deal, and everybody had the folders with the cute rainbow animals and the trapper keeper for all their school stuff. And I just never grew out of that phase. Maybe it’s childish, but it’s fun. And it’s harmless.

I just started reading the Aesthetics Of Joy by a designer named Ingrid Fetell Lee. The premise of the book is that we’ve been taught through ancient traditions that the source of joy lies within us. But, a growing body of research is starting to support the idea that tangible objects can also spark that feeling of joy. In the book, Ingrid embarks on this study to find out what things spark joy, and color was one of her findings.

How did you get started?
It always sounds cheesy to say; I’ve been creative since I was a child. But there’s really not a time I can remember not being enamored with drawing or painting or the creative process. Growing up, we had this little kids’ table with chairs that had pockets on the back full of all our crayons and markers. I remember sitting at that table and coloring away. My dad is a writer and a musician, and my mom is a teacher, so it’s just something we grew up with, being encouraged to be creative. My mom was very anti-TV as well so that probably helped, if we can’t watch TV, maybe we’ll make something.

As a kid, I was always given craft special interest books like learning calligraphy or origami with a dollar bill, and oftentimes, they came with all the supplies you need to do what was in the book. Specifically, there was one book about macrame friendship bracelets, and I latched on to that book; I learned how to do all these different knots. I actually started my first business when I was in elementary school, selling macrame friendship bracelets on the playground. I would take my little box of embroidery thread and pull custom colors for people to make them custom color friendship bracelets during recess. Around this time, my grandfather, who owned his own landscaping business in South Florida – landscaping was a big deal – started having conversations with me about charging for my products. He’d say you need to think about how much it costs you to make it and make sure that you charge the right amount so that you’re not losing money. And then you need to decide what percentage of what you make you’re going to invest back into materials or growing the business and what percentage do you want to save. So from a very young age, those conversations about entrepreneurship were had through my grandfather.

You’ve mentioned throughout your story (you’ll have to listen to the podcast to find out more) that you also cope with chronic issues like pain; how do you do art while dealing with those issues?
Yeah, I have a lot of chronic pain from when I was in the military and art helps me cope with that. With art, I get into that flow state where your sense of time, like physical sensations from your body, kind of cease to exist, and you’re 100% in the moment, focused on what you’re drawing or creating. I need that in my life on a very regular basis. It helps me feel sane. It’s something that takes my mind off these health issues – it’s a mental escape from really anything adulty in life.

Today, we’re talking with Janine Kwoh. She’s the author of “Welcome to The Grief Club,” a book she wrote after realizing how hard and complicated grief when she lost her partner, Nap. Janine is also the owner and designer of Kwohtations, a Brooklyn-based stationery company.

You wrote about feeling the need to grieve less, more privately, and move through it more quickly in the book. Can you tell us more about that? And how to deal with these expectations?

These ideas came from my own experience with grief the questions and struggles I faced. Is my grief valid? Am I grieving too much or grieving incorrectly?

I experienced grief at a young age; my partner, Nap, died when we were both 28. And he was the first person I loved, who died, and I just had no idea what to expect. And at the time, not many people in my peer group had experienced a significant loss. So I felt like my friends wanted to be there for me, but no one really knew how. So, I looked to external cues. But, as a society, we’re not good at talking about grief or making space for suffering, and in turn, it made me feel like I was taking it too hard. People don’t necessarily talk to you about your grief because they don’t want to make you feel bad, or they don’t know what to say. For those of us who work in an office, there’s no federally mandated bereavement leave, or it’s three to five days, which can be another signal that the worst of your grief should be over in less than a week, which is perfect for anyone who’s gone through it. I think the impact of that can make it feel like it’s time to move on and stop talking about it. And that can be really hard.

You never get over grief. You just learn to carry it, and it changes over time. Permitting yourself to grieve is necessary because losing someone you love is so hard. Putting judgment on your feelings is too much for one person.

What if someone wants to be present and supportive? To someone who’s grieving? What’s the best way to approach being supportive? So it’s helpful and doesn’t come off as condescending, insensitive, or sounding like you think the grieving person’s person should suck it up?

I think the most important thing is to say something. It doesn’t have to be the most comforting or the perfect thing to say. In some ways, there is no perfect thing to say; there’s nothing we can say or do to take away that person’s grief. There is something crucial in acknowledging what they’re going through; it goes a long way in helping them by feeling seen and less alone. So even something simple, like I’m sorry for your loss, and I know this is hard, but I’m here is the most important.

That said, there are things to avoid saying.

At least statements – At least you got to say goodbye, they were old, etc. I understand people just want the person to feel better or look on the bright side, but a lot of times, those statements can inadvertently minimize that person’s loss.

Comparisons – Comparing a loss can inadvertently minimize that loss for that person because every loss is different; even if you lost the same person, your loss is different, and your grief is different.

Everything happens for a reason – This is probably everyone’s least favorite statement.

As long as you stay away from those, there is nothing you can say that is wrong.

What are acceptable times and places to cry?

Anywhere and anytime. Many of us feel like we need to compartmentalize our grief, like, I have to go to work and can’t be a grieving person at work; I have to be a productive and functional person. I remember thinking, I will grieve when I get home. But grief is not something we can easily slot in at a convenient time. We can’t control it, and we shouldn’t; we need to co-exist with it, alongside everything else in our lives.
